Description
IDT-spiral wound gaskets consist of a spiral shaped wound combination of a non-metallic tape made from graphite, PTFE or mica and a profiled stainless steel or steel tape. The gasket spiral is fitted with a supporting ring on the inner diameter and/or a centring ring on the outer diameter depending on the application area. Spiral wound gaskets can be distinguished as follows in their design depending on the flange surface:

  • Flange with raised face: Use of spiral wound gaskets with inner- and centring ring
  • Male and female flanges: Use of spiral wound gaskets with inner ring Flanges with tongue/groove:
  • Use of spiral wound gaskets without inner- and centring ring

Spiral wound gaskets for flanges following DIN EN 1092 are described and manufactured following DIN EN 1514-2 with regards to design and dimensions; deviating from this, the dimensions for tongue/groove applications are specified in DIN EN 1514-1, form TG. For flange connections following ASME B16.5, the ASME B16.20 as well as DIN EN 12560-2 are the norma tive basis for design and dimensional specifications for spiral wound gaskets.

Spiral wound gaskets are used specifically in high pressure applications and in critical operating conditions due to their specific characteristics profile. The gaskets are well-suited for alternating loads with accompanying component expansion differences in addition to the high temperature limit [450 °C for graphite, higher temperatures possible depending on the design] and the pressure operating limit [320 bar]. Spiral wound gaskets balance these differences well while also exhibiting low leakage rates.

Spiral wound gaskets comply with TA Luft 2002 [VDI 2440/2200] and the proof for VDI 2290 can also be supplied. The targeted selection of material components and variation of the set-up allows the gasket system to adjust to the requirements of many different media and operating conditions. The SD11 “Minimum Stress” [MS] version, which is optimised with regards to design and construction should be used for flanges as per ASME B16.5 [e.g. Class 150 lbs.] or for flange connections which are not suitable for a standard spiral wound gasket following ASME B16.20 because of bolt forces.

  • Flange roughness of Rz<=80 „µm“ is recommended
